I love this movie, although it’s depressing, much too depressing to watch on a Monday night.
To Live follows the life of a Chinese family over three decades. The film portrays the family struggling to survive over key events in 20th century China: the Chinese Civil War, the Great Leap Forward, Mao’s Cultural Revolution. It’s subtle, stirring, and thought-provoking, and parts of it are incredibly hard to watch. But it’s so worth it.
Other notes: To Live is actually banned in mainland China. That should already give you some idea of the views of Communist China presented in this movie.
